May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a national movement to raise awareness, break stigma and remind everyone that mental health matters — every day, for every person.
At New Beginnings Counseling Team, we believe open conversations can be life-changing. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and this month is a powerful reminder to check in — with yourself, with loved ones, and with professionals when needed.
Why Mental Health Awareness Matters
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year. Yet stigma and misunderstanding still prevent many from seeking support. Mental Health Awareness Month challenges that silence.
This year’s national theme, “Take the Moment,” encourages individuals to pause, reflect and prioritize their mental well-being. Whether it’s a daily mindfulness habit, a deeper therapy journey or simply learning to say, “I’m not okay,” every moment matters.
Signs It May Be Time to Reach Out
Recognizing when to seek help is a sign of strength. Common signals include:
Feeling persistently overwhelmed, anxious or hopeless
Changes in sleep, appetite or energy
Difficulty focusing or functioning day-to-day
Withdrawing from friends, family or activities you once enjoyed
Unexplained physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches
If you or someone you love is experiencing these signs, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to navigate it alone.
What You Can Do This Month
Talk About It. Share your story. Ask someone how they’re really doing.
Educate Yourself. Follow trusted sources and learn more about mental health conditions and resources.
Take Action. Whether it’s scheduling a counseling session, advocating for workplace wellness, or checking in with a friend, take one small step.
